The human skull is made up of 22 bones, which are mostly fused together except for the mandible, or lower jaw, which remains separate for movement. An interesting aspect of the skull is the presence of sutures, which are fibrous joints that connect the bones. In infants and young children, these sutures are not fully fused, which allows for the growth of the brain and skull. The flexibility provided by these sutures also helps make the infant skull more resilient to the pressures of childbirth.
